In recent years, there have been great advances in the technology of hearing aids.
Cochlear implants have become commonplace in many parts of the world, and digital hearing aids have eclipsed their analogue counterparts in common usage.
Hearing aids have certainly come a long way, from the days of ear trumpets.
The following is a timeline of key developments in the advance of hearing aid technology.
? 1550 ? The theory of bone conduction through teeth was developed by Girolamo Cardano.
? 1558 ? Giovanni Batista Porta described some of the earliest hearing aids in his book Natural Magick.
They are shaped like the ears of animals known for their acute hearing abilities.
? 1724 ? A postmaster from Versailles, hoping to cure his own deafness, discovered Eustachian Tube Catheterization.
? 1878 ? Emil Berthold first described the surgical repair of a perforated tympanic membrane, which eventually became known as Myringoplasty.
? 1898 ? The first commercial hearing aid is introduced in America by The Dictograph Company.
? 1912 ? F.H. Quix developed a procedure known as Translabrynthine Labrynthectomy, an early treatment for hearing loss.
? 1938 ? Julius Lempert published the first results of his Fenestration operation to treat Otosclerosis.
? 1952 ? The first transistor hearing aids are developed.
These were hybrid systems with both vacuum tubes and transistors being employed.
? 1953 ? The Zeiss Optical Company introduced the first microscope specially designed for Otologic surgery.
? 1961 ? Neurosurgeon John Doyle Jr. and Otologist William House performed the first microsurgical acoustic neuroma surgery using an operating microscope.
? 1984 ? The United States Food and Drug Administration approved the first cochlear implants for marketing to adults.
? 1990 ? The cochlear implants are approved for use in children by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Since the late 1990?s, many more advances have been made in hearing aid technology.
There are now many companies that offer highly advanced digital hearing aids.
The technology has become refined to the point where hearing aids are now contained completely within the ear canal, and are programmed according to the needs of the individual user.
These developments have given the gift of hearing to a generation of people.
Let us be ever mindful of the pioneers of this important work, as their learning afforded many people the opportunity to listen.

Why Using Noise Reduction Headphones With an MP3 Player Is Better Than Earbuds
by: Lee Blue
MP3 players and portable CD players usually come with the standard ?earbud? headphones. Earbuds fit into the ear like a hearing aid and are lightweight and portable. Their advantages, however, stop there. When it comes to the quality of the music you are listening to, that quality can be greatly diminished due to the inability of earbud headphones to filter out the noises that you are not interested in listening to; such as the voices, car engines, train noises, and barking dogs that may be all around you when you are out in public.
One of the great advantages of MP3 players, such as iPods, and portable CD players is that you can take them with you wherever you go. Sometimes the very reason for bringing them along on an outing is so that you can entertain yourself while you are engaged in other activities, such as jogging, riding on the subway, or waiting...

Hearing Loss is the Number One Disability in the World
by: Jay Stockman
Hearing loss is prevalent in modern societies as a result of the combined effects of noise, aging, disease, and heredity.
Hearing loss is the number one disability in the world; approximately 28 million Americans suffer some type of hearing loss.
In addition, 15 of every 1000 people under the age of 18 have a hearing loss, and nearly 90% of people over age 80 have a hearing impairment.
The incidence of hearing loss is greater in men, than women. The sad part is, that hearing loss is the most preventable disability in the world.
Hearing is a complicated process involving both the sensitivity of the ear, as well as the ability to understand, and interpret the speech.
When we hear sounds, we really are interpreting patterns of air molecules in the form of waves. . The ear is able to pick up these waves, and convert them into electrical signals...

Personal Appearance for Hearing Not Required in Missouri
The elimination of the requirement of personal appearance for hearing in Missouri dissolution of marriage actions arose out of, what may be termed in its broadest sense, a prisoner?s civil rights action.
In State ex rel. Kittrell v. Carr, 878 S.W.2d 859 (Mo. App. 1994), the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, addressed the issue of whether a personal appearance for hearing is necessary to obtain a Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage. The appellant in that case was an inmate in custody of the Missouri Department of Corrections whose petition for Dissolution of Marriage was dismissed for his failure to appear for a hearing after his wife?s default.
The inmate?s spouse had been served, but failed to file any responsive pleading, and was in default. There were...

Table Centerpiece Ideas
Table Centerpiece Ideas
by: Alice Stacy
For special occasions like a family dinner, or when you have business associates or friends over, little finishing touches can add a lot to the dining table where you sit down to share the meal, as well as conversation and each other's company.
Table centerpieces are the favorite decoration, and in a pinch, you can always use the silk arrangement that you keep in the china cabinet, or get a fresh flower arrangement...
